Portrait of Blue Beard and
Victim Bercowetz / Bua
Polystyrene, resin, shish kebab skewers, ping pong balls, wood, string, popsicle sticks, hot glue, toothpicks, liquid nails, foam, acrylic paint. 69 x 30 x 34 inches Bluebeard was a wealthy aristocrat, feared because of his fierce appearance and wild behavior. He had been married seven times, but no one knew what had become of his wives. This was a fairy tale character based on Gilles de Rais, a pedophile, and one of the wealthiest citizens in France. In his castle he murdered over 300 peasant children (mostly young boys), raped their corpses, and had a crack team of alchemists working on invoking demons and spontaneously generating money. The flipside of the story implies that Rais was the victim of political sabotage, however, after confessing to over 180 of the murders in trial, he was burned and hanged simultaneously.
